Managing usage rules

Overview

OpenTV Platform, when used together with NAGRA's Security Service Platform (SSP), enables you to specify usage rules for live channels (including catch-up and NPVR recordings). This lets you do things like restrict output to digital only, enable/disable casting, specify protection/security levels, and so on.

SSP supports the definition of multiple usage rule profiles (for example, for SD, HD, and UHD).

Configuring usage rule profiles in Operator Console (OpCon)

OpenTV Platform enables you to do the following in OpCon’s Usage Rule Profiles section:

  • Enable/disable this functionality globally.

  • Define a mapping between technical channel IDs and usage rule profiles. These are automatically applied to technical channels at ingest. They are also applied automatically to generated catch-up and recorded content.

  • Define a mapping between technical content IDs and usage rule profiles. These are automatically applied to technical contents at ingest.

  • Define a default usage rule profile. At ingest, this is automatically applied to every technical channel and content that does not have an explicit mapping. It is also applied to generated catch-up and recorded content if the channel does not have an explicit mapping.

You can also change/override the usage rule profile that was applied to a technical channel or technical content at ingest:

  • Technical channel: in OpCon, you can change the usage rule profile in Channel Management > {channel} > Playback Variants > {variant} > Security and Restrictions > Usage Rule. See Manage channel playback variants.
Note that technical channels are referred to as Playback Variants in OpCon.

  • Technical content: in OpCon, you can change the usage rule profile in Content > {content item} > Technicals > menu_black.png > Edit Technical Version > Usage Rule. See Technical versions.

SSP includes a number of pre-defined usage rule profiles. When setting up the mapping between technical channels and usage rule profiles, you need to know the IDs of the usage rule profiles that you are using.

Note that although it is possible to customise these profiles and/or create new ones, this must be done in consultation with SSP. Please contact your NAGRAVISiON representative if you need to do this.

Using CPM APIs to set usage rule profiles on channels and content

If you need to change the usage rule profile for a technical channel or technical content, you can also do this using the following CPM endpoints:

  • PUT https://<host>:<port>/metadata/content/v1/technicalChannels

  • PUT https://<host>:<port>/metadata/content/v1/technicalContents

See Content and Product Manager (CPM) API documentation: content v1.
